When Birmingham employers need an immigration lawyer
The usual reasons are practical ones:
- applying for a first licence, including a Temporary Worker licence for charity or religious roles
- answering a refusal
- getting ready for a Home Office compliance visit, or fixing problems one found
- responding to a suspension or revocation
- sponsoring a named worker, from the job details through to the certificate of sponsorship (CoS), the electronic record the worker needs to apply for a visa
We are a free guide, not solicitors. Whatever you send goes to that firm alone, and its answer comes straight back to you. For background on choosing and using a solicitor, read our immigration solicitor page.

How to check an immigration solicitor in Birmingham is regulated
Search the regulator before you share documents or pay a fee. Birmingham is in England, so these are the registers to use:
- the SRA register, for solicitors and law firms in England and Wales
- the Find a Solicitor directory from the Law Society of England and Wales
- the Immigration Advice Authority adviser finder, for advisers who are not solicitors
GOV.UK says every immigration adviser must be registered with the IAA or belong to an approved professional body, and that money paid to an unregulated adviser cannot be recovered (GOV.UK).
Sponsor licence holders in Birmingham
The 22 October 2026 Home Office register lists 3,096 organisations under the town name Birmingham, roughly 2.4% of the 127,744 UK sponsors and second only to London (GOV.UK register). Nine more are filed as "Birmingham, England" or "Birmingham, West Midlands", and Solihull sponsors appear under Solihull.
2,966 of the Birmingham sponsors can take on Skilled Workers. Senior or Specialist Worker comes next with 98, followed by three routes used by charities and faith groups: Minister of Religion with 67, Charity Worker with 62 and Religious Worker with 60. Creative Worker has 46. Use our register search to look up a named employer.
Charity and faith sponsors in Birmingham
Charity Worker and Religious Worker are Temporary Worker routes, and a Temporary Worker licence costs £611 whatever the size of the organisation (GOV.UK). Minister of Religion needs a Worker licence instead. A registered charity pays the same small or charitable sponsor fee for that, while a medium or large body that is not a charity pays £1,682.
A charity named on its regulator's website, under the name it applies with, does not have to send proof of charitable status (Appendix A, section 2.1). Bear in mind that the Charity Worker route is for unpaid voluntary work (GOV.UK), so a paid charity job needs a different route.
Working with a lawyer outside Birmingham
The firm does not need a Birmingham office. UKVI decides most licence applications in less than 8 weeks, and the whole exchange runs through the online form and email (GOV.UK). Compliance visits are different: officers attend the places where your sponsored staff work, and you must give them access to any site under your control (sponsor guidance Part 3). For a charity or place of worship with several buildings, that can mean more than one address.
Costs and salary rules for Birmingham sponsors
Published solicitor fees for a licence application run from £3,000 to £4,500 plus VAT at the two firms that list them. The firm you reach through this page sets out its own price. Pay rules do not change with the city. A Birmingham Skilled Worker job usually has to pay at least £41,700 a year, or more where the occupation's going rate is higher, the same test used across the UK (GOV.UK). The role checker gives the going rate for a job.
Questions Birmingham employers ask about immigration lawyers
What should we send a lawyer first?
Enough for the firm to see who you are and what you want to sponsor. Most applicants send at least 4 supporting documents to the Home Office (Appendix A), and these are common starting points:
- your company or charity number
- your most recent annual accounts or financial report
- a bank statement, or a letter from your bank describing your dealings with it
- proof of VAT or Corporation Tax registration
- the job you want to fill and the occupation code you think fits it
- any refusal, suspension or revocation letter you have received
Can we get a new licence after ours was revoked?
Not straight away. GOV.UK says you will not get a licence if one was revoked in the last 12 months, or in the last 24 months if you have had more than one revoked (GOV.UK). A solicitor can tell you whether a challenge to the revocation is worth looking at first.
