Immigration solicitors in Bristol for sponsor licences

When employers in Bristol look for an immigration solicitor, they usually want help with one of these:

  • getting a licence on a first application
  • weighing up their options after a refusal
  • staying on top of their sponsor duties
  • replying to a suspension letter, or handling a revocation
  • sponsoring one particular worker with a licence they already hold

Each one comes with its own deadlines and its own paperwork. One regulated immigration solicitor firm receives your question and then works with you directly. Our general guide on immigration solicitors explains what that involves.

Must your immigration lawyer be based in Bristol?

Not for the licence. The application form is submitted online, and you then have 5 working days to email the supporting documents to the Home Office (Appendix A, sections 1.3 and 1.5). If a caseworker has a question, they email your key contact, the person named on the licence as the Home Office's main contact. That means a firm anywhere in the UK can handle a Bristol application for you over video and email.

Visits are the exception. Your premises, or wherever your sponsored staff work, is where a Home Office compliance visit happens, and it may be unannounced (sponsor guidance Part 3).

Keeping a Bristol licence compliant

Once you hold a licence, report most organisational changes within 20 working days. Use SMS, the Home Office's online sponsor account, also called the sponsorship management system (Part 3, section C2). A written reply to a suspension letter is also due within 20 working days (Part 3, section C9). Employers usually call in a solicitor during that brief window. The day-to-day obligations are set out in our guide to sponsor duties.

Lawyer fees and the papers to gather first

Solicitors set their own prices individually. Among the firms with published prices, £3,000 to £4,500 plus VAT is what two charge for a sponsor licence application. Whichever firm gets back to you will give you its own quote. It helps to have these ready before you get in touch (Appendix A):

  • your latest annual accounts, or a Companies House link to where they appear free online
  • a bank statement for your business, dated recently
  • HMRC evidence of your PAYE registration, with your employer reference shown
  • a staff list showing each person's job title, if you have 50 or fewer employees
  • your choices for the three licence management roles: the authorising officer, the key contact, and the level 1 user (GOV.UK)

Questions Bristol employers ask about immigration lawyers

How do I check that an immigration lawyer in Bristol is regulated?

Because Bristol is in England, the Solicitors Regulation Authority regulates its solicitors, and each one appears on the SRA register. There is also a Find a Solicitor directory from the Law Society of England and Wales. If your adviser isn't a solicitor, search the Immigration Advice Authority's adviser finder; it shows each adviser's permitted level of work. You can't claim your money back from an adviser who isn't regulated, GOV.UK warns (GOV.UK).

What happens if we were refused a Bristol licence?

A failed application in the last 6 months usually means no licence (GOV.UK). You can seek a review only if your documents weren't considered or the caseworker made an error; simply disagreeing doesn't qualify (GOV.UK). Which of these applies is something a solicitor can tell you after reading the refusal letter. Take a look at our guide to refused licences.
