A Belfast business can instruct an immigration lawyer for its sponsor licence without ever meeting face to face, because applications and supporting papers go to the Home Office online and by email. Getting a sponsor licence with Belfast immigration solicitors
Belfast employers looking for an immigration solicitor usually want help with one of these:
- getting a licence the first time they apply
- weighing up their choices after a refusal
- staying on top of their sponsor duties
- replying to a suspension letter, or handling a revocation
- sponsoring one particular worker under a licence they already hold
Each one comes with its own deadlines and its own paperwork. One regulated immigration solicitor firm receives your question and then works with you directly. What that involves is covered in our general guide to immigration solicitors.

Does your immigration lawyer need to be in Belfast?
Not for the licence. You fill the application form in online, then email the supporting documents. They must get to the Home Office no later than 5 working days after you submit (Appendix A, sections 1.3 and 1.5). Your key contact, the person named on the licence as the Home Office's main contact, receives any question a caseworker has by email. So a Belfast application can be run for you over email and video by a firm anywhere in the UK.
That changes with visits. Home Office compliance visits happen at your premises, or wherever the people you sponsor do their jobs, and they may come with no warning (sponsor guidance Part 3).
Belfast employers with a sponsor licence
On the Home Office register, 22 October 2026 edition, 537 organisations name Belfast as their town (GOV.UK register). The register covers 5,763 towns, and with about 0.4% of the UK's 127,744 licensed sponsors, Belfast sits between Newcastle Upon Tyne (551) and Croydon (536). A Skilled Worker licence is held by 480 of the Belfast sponsors. Use our register search to look up a named employer.
Keeping a Belfast licence compliant
Once licensed, you have 20 working days to report most changes in your organisation, using SMS. That sponsorship management system is the Home Office's online account that sponsors use (see Part 3, section C2). A suspension letter also gives you 20 working days to reply in writing (Part 3, section C9). Employers tend to call in a solicitor during that tight window. The day-to-day obligations are set out in our sponsor duties guide.
Lawyer fees and papers to gather first
Every solicitor decides their own prices. Where firms publish what they charge, two of them ask £3,000 to £4,500 plus VAT to apply for a sponsor licence. The firm that answers you will quote you its own price. Having these ready before you get in touch helps (Appendix A):
- your latest annual accounts, or a Companies House link to where they are posted free online
- one of your business's recent bank statements
- HMRC proof of PAYE registration, with your employer reference shown
- a list of staff and their job titles, if you employ 50 people or fewer
- the three licence management roles and who fills each one: key contact, authorising officer and level 1 user (GOV.UK)
Questions Belfast employers ask about immigration lawyers
How do I know a Belfast immigration lawyer is regulated?
Belfast lies in Northern Ireland, and solicitors there appear on the Law Society of Northern Ireland list rather than the SRA's. Where the adviser isn't a solicitor, use the Immigration Advice Authority adviser finder to search; it shows what level of work each adviser may do. According to GOV.UK, you cannot get your money back from an adviser who isn't regulated (GOV.UK).
What happens if our Belfast licence application was refused?
A failed application in the last 6 months usually means no licence (GOV.UK). A review is only possible where the caseworker made a mistake or failed to consider your documents, not just because you disagree (GOV.UK). Which of these applies is something a solicitor can tell you after reading the refusal letter. Our refused licence guide has more.
