Sponsor licence help from Leeds immigration solicitors

When Leeds employers look for an immigration solicitor, they usually want help with one of these:

  • getting a licence on a first application
  • figuring out their options after a refusal
  • staying on top of their sponsor duties
  • replying to a suspension letter, or handling a revocation
  • sponsoring one particular worker with a licence they already have

Each one comes with its own papers and its own deadlines. A single regulated immigration solicitor firm receives your question, then works with you directly. What that involves is set out in our general guide to immigration solicitors.

Does an immigration lawyer need to be in Leeds?

No, not for the licence. The application form is online, and the Home Office needs your supporting documents by email within 5 working days of submission (Appendix A, sections 1.3 and 1.5). Email is how a caseworker raises questions. They go to your key contact, whom the licence lists as the Home Office's main contact. A firm anywhere in the UK can therefore handle a Leeds application for you by email and video.

Visits are the exception. A compliance visit from the Home Office happens at your premises, or at any site where your sponsored staff work, and it may happen with no warning (sponsor guidance Part 3).

Keeping a Leeds licence compliant

After you are licensed, you must report most changes affecting your organisation within 20 working days. You do this with the sponsorship management system (SMS), which is the Home Office's online account that sponsors use (Part 3, section C2). To reply in writing to a suspension letter, you also have 20 working days (Part 3, section C9). Solicitors are usually brought in by employers during that brief period. The day-to-day obligations are set out in our sponsor duties guide.

What lawyers charge, and the papers to gather first

Prices are set by each solicitor. Two firms that publish their prices quote £3,000 to £4,500 plus VAT for a sponsor licence application. The firm that answers you will give its own quote. It helps to have these ready before you get in touch (Appendix A):

  • your latest annual accounts, or a Companies House link to where they are posted online for free
  • a recent statement from your business bank account
  • HMRC evidence of your PAYE registration, with your employer reference shown
  • a staff list that gives each person's job title, if you have no more than 50 employees
  • who will take on the three licence management roles: key contact, level 1 user, and authorising officer (GOV.UK)

Questions Leeds employers ask about immigration lawyers

How do I check whether a Leeds immigration lawyer is regulated?

Because Leeds sits in England, its solicitors fall under the Solicitors Regulation Authority and appear on the SRA register. There is also a Find a Solicitor directory run by the Law Society of England and Wales. Where the adviser isn't a solicitor, the Immigration Advice Authority adviser finder is the place to look. It sets out what level of work each adviser may do. If an adviser isn't regulated, GOV.UK warns that you can't get your money back (GOV.UK).

What happens if our application for a licence in Leeds is refused?

A licence is not usually given where your application was unsuccessful in the previous 6 months (GOV.UK). A review is only possible where the caseworker made a mistake or failed to consider your documents, not just because you disagree (GOV.UK). Which of these applies is something a solicitor can tell you after reading the refusal letter. Our refused licence guide has more.
