Immigration lawyers in Sheffield for sponsor licences
A Sheffield business never has to meet its immigration lawyer face to face for a sponsor licence, because the Home Office receives the application and its supporting documents online and by email. Immigration solicitors in Sheffield for a sponsor licence
When Sheffield employers look for an immigration solicitor, they usually want help with one of these:
- getting a licence on a first attempt
- figuring out what their options are after a refusal
- staying on top of their sponsor duties
- replying to a suspension letter, or handling a revocation
- sponsoring one specific worker with a licence already held
Each one has its own paperwork and its own deadlines. A single regulated immigration solicitor firm receives your question, then works with you directly. Our general immigration solicitors guide explains what that involves.

Does the lawyer handling your immigration case need to be in Sheffield?
No, not for the licence. You fill in the application form online, and your supporting documents have to reach the Home Office by email no later than 5 working days after you submit (Appendix A, sections 1.3 and 1.5). Your key contact receives any caseworker questions by email; the licence names that person the Home Office's main contact. A firm based anywhere in the UK can therefore handle your Sheffield application by email and video.
Visits are the exception. A compliance visit from the Home Office may happen unannounced, either at your premises or wherever the staff you sponsor carry out their work (sponsor guidance Part 3).
Sheffield employers that hold a sponsor licence
On the Home Office register dated 22 October 2026, 693 organisations list Sheffield as their town (GOV.UK register). This is roughly 0.5% of all 127,744 licensed sponsors in the UK, and it places Sheffield between Cardiff (628) and Luton (708) on the register's list of 5,763 towns. A Skilled Worker licence is held by 656 of the sponsors in Sheffield. To find an employer by name, try our register search.
Keeping a Sheffield licence compliant
Once licensed, you have 20 working days to report most changes to your organisation. You do this through SMS (the sponsorship management system), the Home Office's online account that sponsors use (Part 3, section C2). A written answer to a suspension letter is also due within 20 working days (Part 3, section C9). Employers usually bring in a solicitor during that short window. The day-to-day obligations are set out in our guide to sponsor duties.
Lawyer fees, and the papers to gather first
Every solicitor decides their own fees. Among the firms that publish prices, two charge between £3,000 and £4,500 plus VAT for a sponsor licence application. Whichever firm replies, the quote you get will be its own. It helps to have these ready before you make contact (Appendix A):
- your latest annual accounts, or a link to the Companies House page where they appear free online
- a recent statement from your business bank account
- proof from HMRC that you are registered for PAYE, with your employer reference shown
- a list of your staff and their job titles, if your workforce is 50 people or fewer
- the three roles that manage a licence: who will be authorising officer, level 1 user, and key contact (GOV.UK)
Questions Sheffield employers ask about immigration lawyers
How do I check that an immigration lawyer in Sheffield is regulated?
Since Sheffield is in England, the Solicitors Regulation Authority regulates a solicitor there, and you can find them on the SRA register. There is also a Find a Solicitor directory run by the Law Society of England and Wales. Where the adviser is not a solicitor, try the Immigration Advice Authority's adviser finder; it lists what level of work each adviser may do. Money spent on an unregulated adviser cannot be recovered, GOV.UK warns (GOV.UK).
What happens if our Sheffield licence application was refused?
If your application failed in the last 6 months, you will not usually be given a licence (GOV.UK). A review is allowed only if the caseworker made a mistake or failed to consider your documents, not merely because you disagree (GOV.UK). Which of these applies is something a solicitor can tell you after reading the refusal letter. Our refused licence guide has more.
